Spondylosis Symptoms, Causes and Treatment
What is spondylosis?
Spondylosis is a disorder that causes changes in the bones as well as cartilage and discs. Over time, spondylosis breaks down the spinal tissue (disc) that covers the vertebrae. Eventually, spondylosis results in stiffness of the spine or osteoarthritis. In particular, it attacks the vertebrae of the neck and the lower back, that is, the lumbar region.
What are the main signs and symptoms?
The main signs and symptoms of spondylosis depend on its nature:
Lumbar spondylosis:
1. Stiffness and back pain in the morning.
2. Pain if sitting for a long time.
3. Pain when leaning or lifting certain things.
Cervical spondylosis:
1. Pain in the back of the head.
2. Weakness and numbness in the legs and arms.
3. Stiffness in the neck.
4. Lack of balance.
5. Neck pain that can spread to the bottom of the shoulder.
. Unusual feeling in legs or shoulders.
. Difficulty in controlling urination and bowel movements.
Thoracic spondylosis:
1. Feeling of pain in the middle of the back when leaning back.
2. Pain when the spine is moved back and forth.
What are the main reasons for this?
The main causes of spondylosis are;
1. Increase in age.
2. Any neck injury in the past, such as being injured in a motor accident.
3. Acute arthritis.
4. Spinal cord injuries in the past.
How is it diagnosed and treated?
Spondylosis is diagnosed in the following ways:
1. Physical examination to see detailed history and flexibility of back and neck.
2. Notice the walk.
3. Test the strength and reaction of the legs, arms, and hands.
4. X-ray, MRI, or CT scan is done if needed.
Spondylosis is treated in the following ways:
1. Special medicine to prevent spondylosis from getting worse.
2. Injections or painkillers for severe pain.
3. Brace or soft collar.
4. Exercise to increase muscle strength in the affected area.
5. Physical therapy or physiotherapy.
. In severe cases, surgery is performed where injections or painkillers do not work or the activities of daily life are disrupted.
