Treatment of thyroid tumor and Goiter

Goiter and thyroid tumor

Goiter Symptoms

The thyroid tumor is a gland located in the front of our throat, which looks a lot like a butterfly. The thyroid secretes hormones called thyroxine and triiodothyronine, which regulate many more important activities in our body, including metabolism. Abnormal growth of this thyroid gland is called goiter.

Reason:
Here are some notable causes of goiter

1) Iodine deficiency

2) Hashimotos thyroiditis

3) Grave disease

4) Thyroid nodules

5) Thyroid cancer, etc.

Those at high risk:

Its prevalence is higher in the northern districts of Bangladesh due to iodine deficiency. Again, the rate of goiter among women is higher than that of men. Apart from iodine deficiency in the soil, some foods are eaten in large quantities and for a long time, but the effectiveness of iodine decreases, and goiter can occur. These foods include leafy coffee, broccoli, cauliflower, soy, etc.

Goiter Symptoms

Symptoms:

The symptoms of goiter are usually not understood at first, but appear gradually. The patient may not be able to diagnose the problem on his or her own at first, but someone else may understand. The gland may become progressively larger. Problems with eating or swallowing may occur as the thyroid gland grows. If the goiter is too big, it can cause breathing problems.

Things to do:

If a goiter is suspected, the throat should be examined by a specialist and other tests including blood thyroid hormone should be done according to the need and possible type of disease. In addition, ultrasonography and scans of the thyroid may be required. FNAC may be needed if cancer is suspected.

Treatment:

The type of treatment depends on the patient's symptoms, the size of the goiter, and its cause.
* Small, asymptomatic, innocent (non-cancerous) goiter usually does not require any treatment.

* If the level of thyroid hormone is high (hyperthyroidism) or low (hypothyroidism), the medicine should be taken according to the advice of the doctor.

* Large goiter that exerts pressure on the trachea, esophagus, throat nerves, or blood vessels and causes shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing food, change of voice, or other problems In that case treatment may be required through surgery.
